Matt concentrates his practice upon litigation matters stemming from business, consumer, health care, environmental, and governmental controversies. He also devotes a significant portion of his time to the prosecution of claims against consumer reporting agencies and employers arising from the misreporting and misuse of criminal background reports. His litigation experience includes the successful representation of:

  • A class of over 650.000 individuals throughout the United States in litigation against large consumer reporting agency, which led to a class-wide settlement of $28.75M
  • A class of over 160,000 truck drivers throughout the United States in litigation against regional trucking carrier alleging violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which led to a class-wide settlement of $4.25M
  • A class of over 72,000 truck drivers throughout the United States in litigation against regional trucking carrier alleging violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which led to a class-wide settlement of $2.75M
  • Non-profit rural water association in the United State Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit obtaining affirmance of the district court's award of summary judgment in territory dispute under 7 U.S.C. 1926(b)
  • Plaintiffs against a national trucking carrier in nationwide class action arising from violations of Fair Credit Reporting Act resulting in the largest per-class member statutory damages settlement in the United States
  • Plaintiffs against a large consumer reporting agency in a nationwide class action resulting in a multi-million dollar settlement
  • Many rural water districts in anti-curtailment actions against municipalities under 7 U.S.C. 1926(b)
  • An international manufacturer against a former employee who stole company trade secrets in an attempt to establish a competing enterprise
  • A business client where plaintiff demanded over $1 million and case settled for $60,000 based upon superior litigation strategy
  • Employee-initiated litigation against a business client quelled at the outset, saving the company thousands of dollars
  • A multi-million dollar health care provider regarding federal Stark and Anti-Kickback claims
  • A non-profit association in multi-million dollar contractual dispute arising from allegations of fraud
  • A non-profit association in environmental matter stemming from allegations of negligence and statutory violations of EPA regulation
  • International corporations in complex litigation stemming from federal import/export regulations, patent infringement, and contractual disputes
  • A multi-million dollar corporation in complex litigation filed by a minority shareholder alleging breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract
  • A private landowner in federal eminent domain action filed by national gas utility pursuant to the National Gas Act
  • Numerous water authorities in matters stemming from appropriation powers, contractual disputes, and construction of infrastructure
  • A political subdivision in litigation stemming from allegations of negligence
  • An international real estate investment trust in complex earn-out dispute stemming from multi-million dollar purchase of shopping centers

Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Matt received a B.A. degree in political science from Hampden-Sydney College, in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. He then received a J.D. degree from St. Thomas University School of Law, in Miami, FL, where he served as a member of the Moot Court Board, a Dean's Fellow, and a Legal Writing Instructor. Matt is an active member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the Lorain County Bar Association, where he also serves on the Legal Ethics and Grievance Committee. He is also an active member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. Matt is admitted to practice in the following courts:
